V45 Sabre blowing fuses

#1 Unread post by ceemes »

Any ideas on what would cause my 85 V45 Sabre to blow the fuse to the ignition system?

Here is what happened. Was on the Fraser Valley Toy Run when about 30 minutes into the run I started losing power, though perhaps I had a clogged jet, fowled fuel filter or buggered up petcock. Felt as if 70% of my usual power was gone. Had to rev the engine to keep it from quitting when pulling in the clutch.

Made to the end of the ride and the engine cut out completely and there was absolutely no juice going to the starter motor when I pushed the button. Checked the fuse and found the 10A fuse to the engine, charging system and fuel system was blown. Replaced it with my spare and the engine fired up no problem. However, when I left, that fuse blew in about five minutes.

There was also a smell of burning paper but I couldn't track it down. Charging system and battery are fine. Had to bring the bike home in the back of a pick up truck, the shame of it all.

Any ideas?
Always ask why.

Quick guess is the voltage regulator isn't regulating correctly and sending juice spikes out to the rest of the system. Your main fuse is what's seeing it first and doing it's job by sacrificing itself to save the rest of the components.

Didn't those V-4 Honda's have a rep for toasting regs back in the day? Seems to me they did, but everyone was so beanfreaked about the cam oiling, the regulator thing got swept aside..... but I could be mis-remembering..... :?
No Witnesses.... :shifty:
