Buying a helmet online: Thoughts? Fears? Qualms? Raves?

#1 Unread post by lunchmeat »

What do you guys think of this?

I'm asking because two days ago, I was walking out of my work, fumbling with my gloves, my keys, and my backpack (trying to get it on over my bulky jacket forearm armor) and I dropped my helmet. I'd like to get a new one, and ideally, I'd like to get the exact same helmet (HJC CS-12, maybe not black this time...). Now, I've never bought a helmet online, and I understand that they say it's not a good idea due to sizing, etc. However, since I'm getting teh same helmet I had (have, actually, as I still have to wear it), this should be nullified.

Now, I'm worried about shipping. Have any of you bought helmets online and received them in bad condition? I'd hate to buy a new helmet just to have it get bounced around during shipping. I'd imagine that they'd pack it quite well, but you never know. I suppose that's the main thing - I mean, granted, you don't know what a helmet's been through when you buy it at a shop (could have been dropped, banged, bounced around...) but has anyone ever had any qualms about buying a helmet online and having it shipped?

I'm thinking this is the way to go because a) I might get it cheaper b) there might be a larger selection of colors and a higher availability of my size and c) I don't mind waiting for a couple of days since I can still wear the current helmet. Thoughts?

If you're buying a replacement for the exact same thing you have, I guess it will be OK. I don't suppose there's all that much sample variation in sizes. Regarding shipping: remember that helmet you buy at a dealership was shipped there (in its box, however.) We don't know what happened to the helmet en route to the dealer, but we buy 'em anyway.

Everything I've said is supposition, I've never bought a helmet online. The only gear I've bought online was a jacket, I lucked out as it fit perfectly! :D
