Waving at people on scooters
I live in Albuquerque New Mexico (Just transplanted from Sacramento, CA). I was riding my brand spanking New SV650, some guy going the other way on a scooter, waved at me. I was pretty stunned and just sorta rode on. I thought to myself quite a bit about this while zooming around. Two things kept coming to mind. The first thing was, "man I was rude by not waving back". The second thing was, "why was some middle aged dork on a scooter waving at me?". Now there is nothing wrong with being middle aged, I am there myself (got a bald head and beer belly to prove it).
So what should I do next time? I am leaning towards looking the other way next time I see a scooter coming.

Wave. They are making scooters now that can compete w/ most of the motorcycles made 30 yrs ago. 2-wheels = motorcycle, and besides ... it's best to encourage scooter riders not shun them.
Which would you rather have ... a city full of scooters and bikes or one full of SUV's ???
Over here in Naples, scooters are alot more prevalent than bikes. As a matter of fact, many Italians use the word "moto" (motorcycle) interchangable with "Scooter" or "Motorino." But then again, over here, scooters and bikes are seen as a legitimate and economical form of transport wheras in the States they are still pretty much recreational use only. It would be nice for people in the states to wake up and smell the hydrocarbons, and accepting folks on scooters into the fold is a good way to gain more grassroots and political support for our (hobby, transport, whatever) Not accepting them is almost as dumb as excluding a certain brand-name or type of motorcycle rider from your definition of what a "real biker" is.

Ehhh, I wave if they're riding in a sensible fashion. I've seen some idiots out there on scooters. I've seen some idiots out there on bikes. I wave to the guys who look like they aren't trying to kill themselves.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

TechBMW, very well put!!! I agree with you 100%.
Lately I've been seeing more and more people on scooters. let's hope that the trend continues.
I certainly always wave at all motorized two wheelers.
