After months of research and saving my pennies, I decided a couple of weeks ago the time was right. So I went tire kicking' at half a dozen dealers last week. Did some more research, decided on the bike I want, went back to 3 of those dealers yesterday, got their out the door price.

Today I went and wrote my "knowledge test" (scored 25 out of 25) and tomorrow I am going back to one of those dealers to put a deposit on the bike I want.

It's a Yamaha V Star 1300. Plane jane bike but I am dressing it up to be the same as the tourer model. Why not just buy the 1300 tourer? I hear everyone asking. Because the tour model of this bike only comes in blue red and some colour I can not identify. The salesman called it gold, but it's not. The stripped down version comes in black. Plus this black one has black pipes on it instead of the chrome. These pipes really make the bike look sharp. And the total cost is only $300 more than going the other way and having a bike I will have to pay $1500+ to get repainted.

The hardest part of all this will be waiting to go through the training course. The first one available is the last weekend of May. And I will not take possession of the bike until after I have completed that. This will be my first bike.

I know some people will say 1300 is too big for a first bike, but I will grow into it.

I'm glad you're excited about taking the course, and buying a new bike. However, trust me on this take the course, and THEN go shopping for a bike again. It may turn out that the V-star 1300 is the right bike for you, but after the class you may decide there are other bikes better suited to your wants and needs.

Also, the 1300 is a bit big for a starter bike... I'd hate to see you drop one of those beauty's.

I appreciate your concerns guys.

Here is my reasoning for going for a bike as large as this one is. A few moths ago I injured my back at work. It has not healed properly and seems that it won't. So I need a bike that is a comfortable ride.

I'm not 18 years old nor am I in my 20's or even 30's anymore. As such, I don't feel the need for a crotch rocket. The guys that I will be touring with all have cruisers and have a riding experience of well over 100 years combined. These are the guys that have been guiding me in my selection of bikes. I trust these guys, in fact three of them I would trust with my life, even my families lives. They know me, what I am capable of and what my limits are.

So I do appreciate your comments and concerns, they are not falling on deaf ears. But I will take the advice of these guys I know and trust.

By the way dr bar, I will be going to the Toad Rock rally in June with these guys. You are not that far from there. You gonna be there?

I'd love to do Toad Rock. It's going to depend on my ability to get time off and top up the cash flow issue... I have my daughter's wedding later in the summer followed imediately by a 3 week holiday.

First of all....

to TMW.

I have no opinion either way on your choice of bike....so I will say nothing except that it is also on my list of bikes to test ride when I decide to upgrade. I'll be swapping the handlebars though if I do choose the 1300.

I just want to say that a couple of fellows I know went to Toad Rock last year and had a blast. The only complaint was they couldn't get any sleep. There was partying going on all night and it was too noisy for them to get any sleep.

So, just be warned.

Thanks for the welcome and the warning blues. The warning kinda worries me as I'm not sure I can get that Monday off work. Which means I will have to ride back to Edmonton on Sunday.

Silly....you don't tell them you are going away for the weekend. Don't tell anyone you can't trust.

Yeah, but I'll probably be calling in sick on the Friday so we can leave Thursday night for Toad Rock. Besides if I call in on the Monday I wont get paid for the holiday Tuesday either. That would be a helluva sickness lasting from Friday through Monday.

I'm trying to get my vacation for the week leading into that weekend and book an optional day for the Monday. Not very likely though.
