New to riding

#11 Unread post by morganjp94123456 »

I am new to riding and glad to see that you guys are doing so well with your suzus. I am a larger person who is looking for a good starter bike (my co workers all mention that I need to start off with an 1100 or 1300, they say that I will grow out of a 750 in a month or two. I have noticed riders like skel3tor1 and a few others have been riding 250's for more than a year. Is this preference or situational? I am thinking about getting a 2007 suzuki m50 limited. I plan on going to the MSF course at the end of May. But I will probably get the bike before that. Any suggestions or comments?

Your co-workers aren't you. You must go and sit on some bikes to see what will fit you. If the bike does not fit, you will not be comfortable.

Do you want a sport bike style or a cruiser style?

1100 and 1300 is somewhat large for a first bike.

The Suzuki m50 or a Yamaha V-Star 650 or the Ninja 250 are all decent for a new rider.

I went and spent about 3 hours at a dealership sitting on every bike they had from sports, to touring, and cruisers all engine sizes. I initially wanted to get the 2007 shadow spirit 750 because of the price $5300. It felt really good, but there are so many things to consider (it was chain driven, carburetor, and no gas gauge). looks mean a lot but dont influence my purchase. What pushed me towards the m50 was that it was shaft driven, had inverted front forks, fuel injection, spedo mounted on the bars, and a fuel gauge). I can get this bike for 1000 more, a shadow with shaft is 1000 more. I think it is a great price. but I dont want to get a bike that is too small, and ill get tired of it or one that is too big and ill be afraid to ride it.

I seriously doubt you will outgrow that Suzuki in a month.

I bought the M50 and I love it...It is a bit on the sluggish side between 2-3 gear...But I am also used to riding a sport/crotch rocket...I am glade with my choice...

New m50 limited

#16 Unread post by morganjp94123456 »

Bought a new M50 Limited and absolutely love it!!! Gears are very good, the shift changes are short and take some time to get used to. It shifts like a harley, so downshifting in a stopped position is not possible, FI and gauge are good things to have. starts up and rides like a champ. Pretty smooth bike for a midsize cruiser - seat is very comfy.

Your coworkers are 100% totally full of crap.

That M50 will be more than enough bike for a long, long time.

I ride a 535cc V-twin cruiser, and it keeps up with the 100+ CI H-Ds and 1000+ CC BMWs I ride with just fine. It accelerates faster than my Grand Am and its top speed is over 100 mph.

That is the truth, after I bought the bike and they rode it, they enjoyed it. It handles great in the turns and really feels like a big bike since it feels longer than most midsize cruisers. I love it, it handles great, rides smooth and is light enough that I can keep it from falling when I make a rookie mistake like grab the front brakes too hard in a turn.

Well this thread sort of diverged from the original topic of me, but I'm alright with that. Been riding a lot lately and having a blast. Bought leathers and a full face helmet.

The only thing I'm lacking right now is a proper license. You can't imagine how choked I was when I phoned to book a motorcycle skills test a few days back and they told me they weren't starting tests until May 28th. Looks as though it'll be more illegal riding around my block for over a month.

Hope you're enjoying that m50. That's the bike I was looking at getting brand new before I got this wicked deal on a volusia.
