Getting a motorcycle up and running after 3 years

#1 Unread post by kjhutchi »

My friend's mother needs to sell a 2002 Harley 1200XL Sportster that her ex-husband stopped driving 3 years ago. No preparation was made for the bike to be stored. I was wondering what would need to be done after sitting for so long. I figure the carb will need to be changed along with the fluids and filters, but am unsure if there is anything else. thanks.

Check or replace battery.
Change oil after warming up motor (oil from tank may have drained into bottom end of motor)
Drain Gas and replace with fresh.
Carb does not need replacement. It can be rebuilt for about 1/10 the cost. (If it's sat only 3 years you may get lucky and not have to do any thing)
Check all rubber for dry rot. (tyres, belts, hoses...etc)
Preform all yearly maint. as stated in manual. (fluids/filters)
SEE NO EVO
HEAR NO EVO
SPEAK NO EVO

and above all

RIDE NO EVO

Check my very sluggish post for my experience with a bike that sat for 3 years, it runs like new now!
