honda gas mileage

Old honda 400 riders (or similar)- what are you getting gas milage wise
Please answer stating in kilometers per litre, miles per imperial gallon or US gallon. I have a suspicion something is very wrong with my 78 CB 400- runs pretty good for an old nail, but gets 12km/litre, or 40mpg imperial (33mpg us)

a 1980 CB400T is reported at 57 mpg (us) on the fuel economy guide on this site. I'd say something could be wrong. Maybe need to get the carbs rejetted/synched? And maybe some other things done like plugs, plug wires, air filter, oil/oil filter, fuel filter. I'm probably forgetting something, but those are the biggest contributers to mpg. So is the right wrist, if you're throttling the hell out of the bike, the mpg will suffer for it.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll answwer to those points you make and go from there.
Oil and filter every 3 months
80-100km/hr- 50-60mph highway miles
Chain running true.ot dragging dog legged
brakes all not dragging
new plugs every 6 months- I've never seen a bad one with a hinda cdi unit- they produce a spark that will go through a brick
carbs rebuilt by Burnaby Kawasaki to factory speck, and synched.

Would a dynojet show jetting choice, and sggest a remedy?

On my 450 Nighthawk I get around 200kms per tank consistently. Mind you, I've only gone through two and a half tanks so far and I'm consistently in the throttle :roll: . I have no idea if thats good or bad mileage for my bike, but 200kms for ten bucks of gas is a pretty good deal. Anyone know what kinda distance I should be getting?

Also, sorry to OP if I'm jacking your thread. Let me know, and I'll kill that part of my response.

Used to have a 81 CM400C. Mileage was consistently between 45-55 mpg US depending what your were doing with your right wrist.
I would be the old, slow guy. Just let me know where you are going and I'll try to get there before you leave.

Thankis for your replies folk. It gives me something to go by, which is the fuel economy on my bike sucks.

I'll spend the next dry day sorting out every form of possible drag- dragging drums, off kilter rear axle.chain, then move on to a new air filter to make sure I'm comparing new to new- unfortunately, I'm still staying with the idea that the bike shop did the carbs completely and correctly.

The next step will have to be back to the carbs and check the jets are correct, and then changing jets to fit the illness- smaller main jet, or the jet needle may be worn...

I don't think timimg can go out with these bikes. Any ideas or opinions?

I am currently getting 61.4 US MPG in city, driving at 45-50mph. I have not taken her on the highway yet, but I do go 40 miles one-way to work, so I tested the MPG over three full tanks. It has not varied. Beats my Nissan Frontier all to heck.

Since last time I posted (I think I gave an update in another thread) I received new needles and seats from David Silver Spares in the UK, who have loads- pair was 30 GBP to the door, as there wasn't one in the US or Canada, and the bike now gets 65-70 MPG Imperial. Which is way better than the 25-30 I was getting.

You however are getting GREAT mileage- 60mpg US is about 75MPG Imp, and on a gas sucking automatic. WOW! Look after that bike!!!
