Helmet sizes - need help

#1 Unread post by iflybricks »

My wife and I hit the local superstore so she could try on some helmets. She likes the flip-up helmets (like the Shoei Multitec for example) but the problem is an extra-small is still a little too big. After some surfing it appears no one makes a flip-up in a xx-small. She did try on an HJC full-faced helmet in xx-small and the fit was great, but no luck with the flip-ups.

Can anyone out there point us in the right directions or is she out of luck with a flip-up style helmet? Thanks in advance.

I never really knew that I had a small head until I went looking for motorcycle helmets.

I'm a small in a standard HJC helmet (not modular/flip). I tried a modular helmet and I felt like I was swimming in it - and it was a small as well.

Even the helmet I did get, I don't feel super-confident about the fit on the cheeks. Feels a little loose.

So, I may have to go helmet hunting again. But I love the large view port in the HJC helmet I have.

Flip ups tend to be looser for some reason. Yeah, they're cool, but consider SNELL hasn't come up with a way to test the chin bar latch mechanism (I don't think that DOT has a specific guideline for the chin bar).

She may just need to get what fits. I have an XS head and haven't found a flip up that fits me either. (At least that doesn't seem to weigh 15 pounds.)

Vox (one of the cheaper brands) makes flip up helmets in youth sizes, other brands may offer youth sizes also. A large youth should be the same as a xxs. I have a VOX (I really wanted a Schubert or SYS 4 but almost had a coronary when I saw price) and like it (I figure I am better with a cheaper helmet <actually more likely to wear> that actually fits than a good one that doesn't--I have an odd head--no comments please)
I have had in the past Biffee (poor quality, expensive, and noisy) and Nolan (well built but still noisy) modulars and prefer the VOX. (quieter, better tunnel vision, but less vertical vision, also doesn't strangle me at high speeds w/o windscreen, love the sunscreen)

When I get a new helmet I read reviews and find what I want, then I settle on what actually fits. And yes modular helmets seem to be bigger (you usually need one size smaller than a full or open face)

What would be really nice is if they would make a helmet that would form to your head like custom earplugs!

You know - there shouldn't be anything technically difficult about doing that. I mean if they can make rubber versions of male genitalia - the head should really be a much simpler shape to deal with.
