The Rev. Fred Phelps is the leader of a religious group that stages (highly distasteful) protests at the military funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq.
There are motorcycling organizations (most notably the Patriot Guard Riders) that ride in these funerals and attempt to shield the families and friends from the wacko protesters.
My guess is that you ran across one of those riders.
Then again, maybe it's someone who hates competitive swimming
Ahhhh, another Freddie hater! Fred Phelps came to my school one time actually! Rather fun going over to where he was picketing gays and lesbians and whoever else he thought was evil (everyone but his church) and hitting on him! Don't think I've seen such a shocked face since!

It's a small group of mostly one inbred family that is psychotically homophobic. You have to be careful, though--the organization funds itself by law suits against people who are so incensed that they they attack the protesters.
Ah! I've heard of him. I just didn't know the name. Kudos to the Patriot Riders! But I'll be damned if I'll even put a No Phelps patch on my leather. Even bad publicity helps those clowns. I'm not about to give them even that satisfaction!

Just remember not all Phelps are related. I'm a Phelps, but I'm thankful I'm not related to that Fred Character. It's kinda funny when I first saw the subject line, I thought WHAT? 'What does Phelps mean?' I'm still trying to figure that one out. So when any of you do, please let me know. Have a safe Labor Day weekend to all.
