Got my gear and signed up for my MSF course. . .

O ya now I need a bike lol. So I have been on this forum a little while now reading and learning and have gotten some great information. I am 18 and want a bike for the gas millage and because it has been something I have always wanted to do. I don't know to much about bikes and am learning more everyday. I want to get the Ninja 650R because I am a bigger guy, 6 feet 2 and 220lbs and don't want to get a Ninja 250R and have to trade up or be afraid to go on the freeway due to wind. So I got a great deal on a Bell Helmet today (Black) that fits my head really well, a pair of Scorpion gloves and a Alpinestar Mesh/Textile jacket. And am signed up to take my MSF course at the end of the month. And plan on getting my bike October 11th or 17th. Wasn't planning on getting it till January so this is a pleasant surprise. I plan on getting Frame sliders, Should I get the bar ends and spools as well? Anything else I am forgetting?

Mr. Invisible - its not a SS bike, I have heard of many getting this as a first bike.

Sounds like the MSF course is before the bike purchase?

I wouldn't buy the bike before your MSF course. I believe you're biting off more than you can chew. Try the 250's at the course out first before you decide IMO.

Yeah, when they say the 650R is mild, they are coming from the perspective of Gonzo sport-bikes. It is mild by those rights, but still has I think 80-90 HP.
Not an un-serious bike by any stake...Talent and brain are inverse proportional to your danger level on this machine, and even with an abundance of those, your learning curve would be better on a bike you can run full=out.

My brother is probly 6'2" #250 and 7 years my elder, and he is loving his Ninja 250 for his first season...and he lives in a place where there are no 25,35,or 50 MPH roads.

I started out on a 70 HP machine years ago, but then again, I am extremely cool

, then I realized I had later I had many poor habits that needed much attention to make right.

Nop I do plan on taking the course first before I buy, I just want to do this thing the right and safe way So thnk you all for your opinions and advice.

ninja 250's have a lot more pep than people expect, don't count it out offhand. truth is, hight's going to have more of an impact than weight for the bulk of these bikes. as for highway speeds and such...well there's people who've pulled off the Iron Butt Challenge (1000 miles in 24 continuous hours) on a ninja 250.

as for trading up, whats wrong with that? 250's are in high demand, and selling off your ninja 250'll get you pretty much as much as you put into it. unless you wiped out on it and beat it all to heck. but then..if you did that, well...good thing you didn't start on the 650, eh?

if you're set against the 250...take a look at the ninja 500, it might not be as pretty as the 650, but it'll be a decent compromise between the 2.

personally I say take the MSF and get on the seat of a 250 before ruling it out. a lot of the MSF courses have ninja 250's as one of the bike options, along with the rebel, the nighthawk, and a few others
