Today I wore my old half helmet because it was so damn hot. I still wore my jacket ( mesh) but good lord did I want to take it off. It was TOOOOOO HOT ( it's black) LOL.
Anyway, I need help convincing me not to be so worried about sweating and stay safety oriented.
HELP!

You know, I saw that link coming - had to go there anyway - and winced at every one of those pics - especially the chick with the giant gash across her chin. Now, that had to take a lot of stitches to fix.

This is an interesting post because I just did the Key West Poker Run where there must have been over 15k bikes, and although I saw a lot of sports bike riders wearing jackets, I can't remember seeing even one (cruiser) rider wearing one.

As for helmets, I wore mines the whole trip but I estimated that about 75% of the riders I saw weren't wearing them. I admit that for short rides I sometimes don't wear any protective gear other than jeans and boots (not a good thing), but it does get so hot here sometimes that it takes away some of the joy of riding when you have so much stuff on.

1. Why wouldn't you wear it?
2. Have you seen pictures of road rash?
3. Remember how bad it hurt when you were a kid and fell off your 10 speed at like 10 mph?

Personally I always wear gear. I don't care if people ride helmetless / jackletless; I see it a lot in the city. What pisses me off is see a guy on a sport bike with his girlfriend / SO on the back in flip flops, a tank top, and shorts, oh yeah and no helmet. F*ck yourself up if you go down, but don't allow your passenger to be permanently scarred. Of course, then you don't look cool while swerving through traffic on one wheel. Idiots.

Admittedly I have a tough time with ATGATT......and although I have a full face helmet, it gathers dust on the shelf in the garage as I opt to wear my half helmet all the time. I look at that website and I watch those videos and it is a much needed reminder of just how vulnerable we are out there. :|

Someone said they dress for "riding longevity" - and I think that's a great way to look at it. I plan to re-evaluate next time I swing a leg over.
