My buddy listens to his IPOD while riding...Is this a poor choice? I have a had enough time hearing other cars, much less listening to music when riding...What do you think?

I think your buddy is an *******. Hope he doesn't find out the hard way what danger he has put himself in.

316.304 Wearing of headsets.
(1) No person shall operate a vehicle while wearing a headset, headphone, or other listening device, other than a hearing aid or instrument for the improvement of defective human hearing.
(2) This section does not apply to:
(a) Any law enforcement officer equipped with any communication device necessary in performing his or her assigned duties or to any emergency
vehicle operator equipped with any ear protection device.
(b) Any applicant for a license to operate a motorcycle while taking the examination required by s. 322.12(5).
(c) Any person operating a motorcycle who is using a headset that is installed in a helmet and worn so as to prevent the speakers from making
direct contact with the user’s ears so that the user can hear surrounding sounds.
(d) Any person using a headset in conjunction with a cellular telephone that only provides sound through one ear and allows surrounding sounds
to be heard with the other ear.
(e) Any person using a headset in conjunction with communicating with the central base operation that only provides sound through one ear and
allows surrounding sounds to be heard with the other ear.

With that said...yes I listen to an IPOD when cruising. Arrest me!

your in florida. the law is different in every state. Its illegal in michigan and maryland that I know of.

You put yourself in danger when you hop onto your motorcycle and take off down the road. You think this *******'s only in danger because he decided to wear an ipod during his ride? But I suppose I'm an ******* too. Well, an ******* of danger, that is!!

I think anything that distracts you while you are driving a motor vehicle is bad, especially if your driving a motor vehicle without a seat belt and side curtain air bags, like we do. I think it just reduces your chances to notice something, like a sound, that may save your life.

I agree with TrueFaith, but A LOT of people do use ear buds and iPods or cell phones.

One of the reasons Harleys have a loud muffler is, so others can hear you comming. And if you are listening to music or other, it distracts you and may not hear what goes on around you. You need all your attention on driving.

Actually Harley's come from the factory with 'legal' exhaust systems. Most owners install aftermarket systems to make them louder.

Yup they are very quiet from the factory as per Fed standards.

I once heard a bone stock sportster and the mechanical clatter of the air cooled engine was actually louder than the exhaust.

Definitely... A guy from school had a stock Nighttrain. The other Harley guys would tease him about "having a Honda" lol.
Well they did until a VTX1800 rolled by and drowned them all out
