I understand. The U.S. has been blessed for several decades now with comparatively low gasoline prices.

To the best of my knowledge, European prices are much, much higher because of taxes that support social security systems. I'm not sure what Canada's tax burden is per liter or gallon, nor have I read much about Asian prices.

Here in Wisconsin, state gasoline taxes account for 32.9 cents per gallon.
Add to that the federal tax of 18.4 cents per gallon, and the total per gallon tax is 51.3 cents.

Even with our previous prices hovering around $4.00 per gallon, U.S. drivers have still enjoyed relatively inexpensive energy. I suppose what gets us upset is the rapid prices increases! And now that prices are droppong, we're happy as pigs in mud!

I thought that sounded kind of high, so I looked it up. Michigan is pricey at around $.55/gal + 6% sales tax, but California still has you beat at $.65/gal +7.25% sales tax.

Our tax burden on fuel is disgusting. Instead of a flat tax, it's a percentage of the cost, so, every time fuel cost rise, our taxes go up and up and up...

uhh so is ours. when it was $4/gallon we were paying $1.01 for a gallon of gas in tax's. Most of that was state tax's.right now at $2/gallon we would be paying 90 cents/gallon. 55c + 6% = 72cents plus the 18.4cents for fed tax = 90.4 cents a gallon.

with that said wife just got it at $1.65/gallon today.
