They are seemingly waterproof and come in various sizes so you can buy a standard automobile gps and throw it in the RAM mount when you're on the bike. Mine works well and water hasn't been a problem. However, using a power cable means punching a hole in the back and that's where the waterproofing becomes questionable.
Punch a hole in the back of the GPS? A mount made for the model of GPS will have a space for the power cord.

Two very good companies that sell GPS/gadget mounts: cycoactive.com and cyclegadgets.com

I haven't done that yet so I can't comment on how well it works. Since I bought mine about a year ago, maybe they've come out with some new products to address that issue. I think it's worth looking into.

I dont know what ram mounts you have seen but my ram mount is open except for where the GPS unit clips onto it. and now my wife made me forget my train of thought. I had more to say but cant remember it now.

Here's a RAM case that holds a GPS and is water proof:

There you go. The point of the lock is a simple deterrant for potential passerby thiefs. Plus it provides piece of mind when i leave the bike out with the GPS for any amount of time (which isn't more than an hour at a time and the bike is in my view).

What is the point of any lock? If somebody really wants something they'll eventually get it given the motivation and proper tools.

obviously...however, the ability to use a lock is a feature available to those who wish to use it. If you don't want to use it then don't

It does have text to speech. It will also play mp3's off of an SD card. It will integrate with a bluetooth headset and your bluetooth compatible cell phone. It biggest drawback is the price. Around $700.
I aspire to get that one some day. Need to find a lay away, someplace that wil let me make payments. Those 550 are just too useful.

Well after reading here and other reviews, I decided on the Garmin Nuvi 200 based on low cost and the OEM option for a motorcycle mount. At the time I bought it, it was also the lowest price compared to TomTom or others.

The lowest cost and the only at that cost level to have the option of a motorcycle mount sold me.

I've yet to put the optional mount on my bike but it work very nice in the cage and is small enought to fit in my front pocket for saftey and short storage.

Thanks again.
