Im glad your son is okay - IF he is interested in ridign later on, when he recovers from his fall, I suggest you get him some extra training as a gift for you all....nothing better for everyone than a confident rider riding within his abilitiies. Good luck

Actually my son and I took our MSF class together, and we only let him ride with us for the first 6 months. We also made him buy his own bike, so he would appreciate it more (which he does). He is a very responsible boy. He has learned a very valuable lesson in all this. It HURTS to get in an accident! LOL!

I know I said we took his lisence away until 18 but with him working, and hubby and I can't drive him due to us working we gave it back, but with restrictions. Other than work he is only allowed to ride with one or both of us. I do have to say he agreed and has followed the rules exactly. I have noticed a big improvement in his riding (safety) since the accident. He is slower, and follows the rules without complaint now. (Hubby and I do NOT speed and we obay all laws.) I told him one night while talking to him. I said "Now do you know why your dad and I were always telling you the right way to do things?" He told me that he really thought nothing bad would or could happen to him until then. He said that he now realizes that we were trying to stop anything bad before it happened.

He did tell me too that he is sorta glad it happened, because now he realizes that bad things do happen. He also said that he doesn't want to die or be paralized. He told me that he believes that my mother or father (both deceased grandma died on new years day, and grandpa died on December 24. Jason's accident was December 17th) and or a guardian angel were there for him. He can't beleive that he isn't dead or crippled. The way he hit his back it should have snapped his spinal cord but thank GOD it didn't. The impact snapped 2 huge wooden blocks that they use to hold the guard rail up. He had a perfect bad bruise in the exact shape of a big square block on his back. I took pictures and gave them to him at his request to hang in his room as a reminder.

Anyway I took him to the Kawi shop and bought him another helmet and a really good riding jacket. So now he is better protected than before. Hopefully he won't have a need for it though.

While we were there we found out that on New Years morning at 3:20 AM the motorcycle tech that services our bikes was killed in a motorcycle accident. Everyone there was crying. Chris (the tech) was driving on the causeway at a high rate of speed and hit a guard rail head on and was thrown 100 feet. He died at the scene. That kinda scared Jason to actually know someone personally who has passed that way.
I know it's late, but happy holidays.

Thanks for the update; I watched a kid the other day riding down the street (not speeding) without gear other than a helmet, and your son crossed my mind. I'm glad he's geared up and back in the saddle...and that the Big Picture seems to have stuck.

I have NEVER been in a collision accident. Have never got into any accident on ice. never gotten a wreckless driving of any kind.... So [failing to fulfill the] requirement of logging all hours DOES NOT mean they will automatically be in accidents etc etc etc. ...that would be how to drive it not necessarily how to keep it on the road as im still learning that by driving slow in bad conditions hehe).
I agree that wrecking isn't an automatic outcome of failing to log all the required hours in the given situations such as night, rain, etc. You're absolutely right about that. And as an ex Shock-Trauma Tech in a volunteer rescue squad in a somewhat small county, I think it's awesome that no one's hit you yet, and that you're such a quick study to learn new things.

Also, you seem to have some sense about being careful. That's an important trait which has likely made a big difference between your driving history and my son's.

When viewed from the opposite direction rather, that my son has had a lot of wrecks, the fact that he didn't really complete driver's ed as he should have could be a contributing factor to his accident rate. It can be compared to a rider who just so happens to have been allowed to "sit out" and not do some of the exercises in the MSF course (wouldn't pass the course) or who didn't take it at all. Such a rider might have a higher than average accident rate, but it doesn't automatically mean he or she will, I agree. :)
oh I missed the point of not finishing the drivers ed course.

Well I am a father and any news of anykind of accident can at first just take your breath away and I am happy to hear your son is ok.

NOW AS A RIDER ATGATT
all the gear all the time
dress for the crash not the ride. I wouldn't push him at all to ride again when he is ready he will let you know
there aint nothin like it
