Kawaski Vulcan 500 LTD EN500CF

I was starting to install a Protac Drivers backrest and one side mounting bolt came out fine and reinstalled fine.

The other side was very hard to remove, I put the bracket on and attempted to reinstall the oem bolt. It was as difficult and turned impossible as the bolt bent.

I have just order (2) bolts (I only need 1) from bikebandit.com but was thinking if I should also run a tread chaser through the frame fitting that the bolt goes into.

I have not rethreaded or chased threads in 25 years. Any suggestions on starting the tool and resistance points ?

How much should I expect to pay (retail price) of the handle and male tread chaser? It is also metric bolt with a 10 mm socket head.

Thanks for any insight you have.

FL as usual spray a good lubricant in there not WD-40 it's not oil. Liquid wrench or good old 10w30. Cheapest way to clean it out (make sure this is needed first) go buy a____ mm tap make sure thread is matching, fine machine threads can be a little tricky, i like to put them right in a 1/4'' drive socket or a t handle instead of buying a tap and die set. ya dont want to retap it so work it in with your finger tips, if it was bad enough to bend a bolt though you may have to. if it can't be cleaned up get a chart from any local part store (auto) and drill out the old and tap in the new. chart will tell you what size bit for next size up. And maybe use a good stainless bolt instead of the chrome junk some of the after market kits come with. A good tap and die set is good to have around. If your'e not comfortable doing it at home by all means get some help, although the local bike shop isn't always full of machinest's these days. alot of custom HD shops are a good bet they're used to broken stripped bolts :wink: average franchised bike shop gets 65 bucks an hour. Even though your not cutting a new thread make sure you don't just run it in there go like a quarter turn in back it out 1/2 turn back in a 1/4 back out ect. if the head is a ten the thread its self could be 8 mm make sure. hope this helped sorry for the long verson. have a great day
