Deep South Eats Help

Not that I am counting but in 22.5 hours I depart for New Orleans via the Natchez Trace. I have never been to this fine southern city...and I understand the eats are as good as any. I like cajun styled food and I have a desire to try alligator as I am also told it is tasty.

My need from you good people...or at least those of you who have been to New Orleans in the somewhat recent past...is a suggestion. Where would you eat if you were only gonna get one good meal in that town? (I will try as many of your favorites as I can fit in.)

Ask the locals, they always know the good places that are worth it. Obviously there are places to find good po-boys but there are so many hidden gems that you'll never want for good eats in Nawlins

I don't know where to eat in "Nawlins" (ugh) but as a New Orleans native, I can recommend a whole bunch of places. You can also just ask people there...most new orleanians will tell you where to go, and why it's better than any other restaurant.

Where are you staying exactly? If in/near the quarter, there's a ton of good places for seafood or cajun. If you're going strictly for cajun, go to Mulate's. They have a dance floor and usually have a live band. (and also usually cajun mothers who'll teach you the two-step)

Mulate's, 201 Julia St. (near the convention center), cajun
Verti Marte, 1201 Royal St, poboy's
Maspero's, 440 Chartres St, cajun/seafood
Mother's, corner of Poydras and Tchoupitoulas, poboy's/sandwiches
Deanie's, 841 Iberville (the best seafood in NO)
--> or also in metairie (bucktown), 1713 Lake Avenue

and of course, you must go to Cafe du Monde for the beignets (800 Decatur)...just don't wear black to eat there....you'll see what I mean after you're done :-)

hopefully this list will get you started. If you're staying in Metairie or (god help you) Chalmette (where I grew up), let me know and I can update the list.[/b]
