Dropping like flies

#1 Unread post by mazer »

I tried to visit my local Honda dealership in order to get some local rags on motorcycling and found them gone. This is the fourth gone in the last couple of years....has anyone else noticed that dealerships are becoming more scarce in this economy?
This is of concern to me only because I ride an older bike and sometimes parts or details about how to work on it are hard to come by and the dealership was a good source of information.

Dealerships- it's a mixed bag around here. Two start-up dealerships within 20 miles of me both folded in 2008 within a year of start-up. My local Triumph/Kawi/Suzi/KTM dealership laid off my favorite salesperson. However another local dealership added a major franchise to the 3 they already had.

The local Honda dealership sells Yamaha also, which is good for them considering Honda's laughably reduced product line. (Yeah, and those DN-01's are just flyin' out the door... )

I'd say the established dealers will ride the storm, but start-ups and marginal players will not.

Unfortunately the Harley stealership down the street from me went out a few weeks ago. It was nice having that place down the road and not having to drive 30 miles to have the bike serviced...just in time for needing new tires. Damn the recession.

So far the only one to go down here has been a Big Dog dealership. We have 2 Honda, 2 zuki, yammi kawa shops and 2 local Harley shops. They all seem to be doing pretty good
Whatever happened...I didn't do it!!

I heard that Honda is going to consolidate all it's vehicles and products in single dealerships. Cars, PWC's, Bikes, Generators, etc... all under one roof.

At the moment, things look OK here. No dealerships have been lost locally in the last couple of years. In fact, a new Triumph dealer opened just a few months ago. Don't know what the national situation is like though, or what the backroom talk is.

This is already happening inToronto.

We've also had 2 or 3 dealers go under but they actually closed before the recession.
I always follow the rules.
The only exception to the rule occurs when I make an exception to the rule not to make an exception to the rule and that only occurs under exceptional circumstances.

Now that would be really cool. A little cross-pollination of sales.
