1200 Custom Sportster Questions

I Rode metrics since time began but just got a mint 2003 100th anniversary Sportster. No manual or tools. It has a straight oil temperature dipstick. Should the level be checked upright or on the kickstand? Is there a way to adjust the rear shocks WITHOUT the spanner which I assume was probably in the tool kit that didn't come with the bike. I asked the local H-D dealer about the oil level check and he said check it with the bike upright but several people have said "Check it on the stand." Kinda makes you wonder.

Listen to the dealer this time. Stand that bike up to check the oil.

You might be able to use some sliding water pump pliers, but I wouldn't. Buy the tool you'll need it.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

Things must have really changed since I owned my '86 Sportster 1100, because I distinctly remember checking the oil level with the bike on the stand. That's why the dipstick has marks on it.

You should register on The Sportster Page and ask your question on theur tech forum just to be sure.

Upright, if level is full and you pull dipstick on sidestand you get a nasty mess. It will take more oil if upright but amount is very small about a cup and a half or 1/4 of a quart. Also use trans/primary oil made for Sportsters, makes shifting alot easier with cold motor.

You can adjust shocks with a pair of channel locks but will most likely slip and scratch them, best to get the proper wrench. Should be able to find at any shop that deals with Harleys no need to go to Stealership (can also get at many japanese shops, Snap-On and Mac have them too)

ALSO get a manual.

You don't get a surprise either way when you check the engine oil level which is what I was talking about. you must be talking primary.
