Fatal accident

Bad day yesterday,

I use the scoot to go to the gym and on my way back I came across an accident scene. Cops were there, area taped off, EMS on site.

I know some of the cops from our local station and waited a little while for them to come and talk to me.

There was a BMW 650 CS scattered all over the road and the rider lying under a blanket. A police car was close by with damage to the left hand side.

As I stood there, my wife came rushing up with tears in her eyes. Our neighbor who was on his way to work saw the accident scene, called his wife, who knocked on our door and told my wife that it was me. She then rushed to the scene.

You can imagine what a shock she got, then the relief that it was not me and then the shock of seeing a fellow rider down. It was a huge emotional roller coaster for both of us and we can only imagine what the riders family will have to go through.

I have many conflicting stories as to how the accident occurred, the end result being that a rider lost his life.

I hope his family can find the strength to get through this.

Maybe it's my imagination, but it seems the level of motorcycle accidents and fatalities has been unusually high in the USA this season. Maybe I'm just paying more attention to these news items than I used to.

Certainly automobile drivers around here have reached new heights in their urgency to arrive everywhere two seconds sooner (!!!) combined with new lows in their skill and discipline behind the wheel.

I suspect the increasing number of doohickies to play with (cell phones, Blackberries, iPods...) is contributing to the overall rise of crappy drivers. I get so mad when I'm on the freeway and I'm not even exaggerating 50% of people have some sort of device that they are either using or fiddling with.

It doesn't even have to be electronic!! I saw a guy on Rt 66 going into DC the other day in traffic reading a newspaper.

It's always hard to hear of another rider going down for good. Thoughts and prayers going out to the family...

sapaul is over in South Africa, but over here the story isn't much different.

I feel bad for the guy even more than the usual fatality - or his family anyway. I've heard of accidents here in the Linden, NJ area - where a person hit a judges car that pulled out of his driveway not looking - and no where near did the fault go toward the judge.

More than likely they will say the biker was at fault - even though from the description it seems like a traditional left turner accident with the bike as the 'striking' vehicle.

That really SUCKS that The Goose was called and showed up expecting to see you laying there. That has to cause some tenseness around the house.

Glad it wasn't you, Paul. And sorry for the guy who did die that day. But more glad it wasn't you....

I hate hearing stories like this one. No one deserves to go out like that regardless of who was at fault. It's a reminder to me to always stay vigilant on the road. Better to be in the wrong and alive than be right and dead.

Honestly in order to escape these impatient asssclowns in their cars you have to ride a bit aggressively then these pundits go on about how bikers are aggressive and causing roads to be dangerous.

Now cars are coming equipped to compensate for driver stupidity such as lane drift warning, or blind spot warnings since no one does head checks anymore. This country is becoming fat lazy and stupid for a reason.
