It's the only thing that really messes me up with biking. The worst I've done is drop my bike at very slow speed (at nighttime I was focusing on a shadow in the road as I was parking in my yard - turned out to be a guy on a bicycle). However, one day I was cruisin' along a favorite country highway, and decided I really needed to glance over at a yard sale. I even made sure to just take a quick peek, but it was enough to make me drift to the shoulder of the road - DOH!
Cheers,
Loonette

Hehe... I havent hit anything yet. Ive been taking it real slow and practicing all my skills, so lately I've been driving through the pretty big nest of residential streets around where I live. Mainly when I know there won't be too many cars (or kids) around.
But of course the first time I have to interact with a car at a 4-way stop (I was turning right and he was turning left from my right side), I think "yeah, don't hit that car!" and so of course I take the turn real wide right towards the car. Luckily, I am able to pull myself away, but that's not nearly as good as not target fixating in the first place and that kind of thing would eventually get me in trouble.

If you ride with no hands, you can look wherever you want
. So...Get the bike going where you mean to go, loosen that grip, and do some sightseeing. Not recommended on very sharp curves, and most intersections, but very doable everywhere else. A lot more fun than staring at the road out front all the time. Do some bicycle riding, and practice looking around. A road bike really swerves until you get it right. Using the bars as controls, rather than supports helps immensely with the target fixation problem..so does keeping your head in the particular moment. Sometimes sightseeing is definitely out...obviously.

Ride safe...God bless!
