Expoerience with 80 Suzuki GS550E

#1 Unread post by -Holiday »

Just picked one up for my girlfriend for $400 as a starter bike. It looses spark, but i'm hoping its a quick fix. Its in the shop now.

ANyone have any experience with these bikes? I've never owned a GS, but I understand they arent bad bikes. Its got 25K miles, and externally is in really good condition.

Thoughts?

fyi, my girlfriend took the local MSF course and has her license.

I had an '83 GS650GL. Bulletproof bikes. I put ~17000miles on my GS in a little over a year without any real problems. Keep up with the regular maintenance and they'll treat you good.

I had a 77' GS550 for my first motorcycle. I couldn't hurt that bike and believe me at 15 yrs old I tried.

I had over 35,000 miles on it when I sold it and never had any trouble out of until the stator went out. I sold it because I couldn't afford to fix it but still made $100 more than I paid for it which is always good.

My friend pat has one, i helped him get it running again. and it worked great till his timing chain broke, he's finally getting it fixed after almost 2 years.... procrastinator i tell ya what.

Like others have mentioned, the stators are the weak link....
