Salespeople have tried to convince me that paddle shifters are "manual transmissions".

NO. They. Are. Not.

Agreed. They are automatics with sensors telling the tranny to shift.

I hate the automatics where you tell it when to shift. I'd rather just have an automatic. If you can't drive a stick, don't pretend.

I agree. On my 01 Dodge Dakota I have one of the rarest combinations of motor/engine made.
10% of the trucks that came out of the factory that year were manual.
Most of those were 6 cylinders.
Most of the rest were Sport interior packages.
I have an SLT (power locks/windows, nicer audio, sliding rear glass, etc) with a V8 driving the wheels through an NV3500 5 speed manual transmission.

I have to admit, I ticked off the automatic box. I'm not really interested in cars as performance vehicles (that's what the bike's for). I just use my car for transportation, so the sense of involvement and control with a manual tranny isn't as important to me.

You know, I searched out for renting a manual transmission car for my stay in California to no avail. I, for some reason, hate driving automatic. Even if I'm tired, the manual drive keeps me engaged.

My very first vehicle was a manual ('78 Ford Courier pickup). There were several automatics along the way, but our last three cars have been manuals. Like JC Viper said, I like to be engaged with my vehicle. And I can't ride the motorcycle in the snow, so my Outback keeps me happiest in the winter. Driftin', baby!!!

Cheers,
Loonette

My brother and I share a Mazda 3 and it has Tiptronic-like semi-auto transmission. It's great if stuck in backed up traffic and you don't want to deal with a clutch but other than that I couldn't deal with it. Going from 1st to 2nd gives me a jolt that I wouldn't get in a manual transmission.

It pretty much seems the standard transmission is going the way of the dinosaur with all these new Autos and semi-autos coming out. A car, after all, has to get from A to B and that's it.
