My top-secret Guinness-swilling operatives (nationalities withheld) in the UK factory have revealed it was due in part by the sheer number of yellow body panels causing temporary flash blindness when requiring them to look away from the sun-shiney panels when working on other darker coloured parts of the bike.

(of course plenty of Guinness was consumed during work hours and other "intelligence" operatives report it was the curse of John Players Special coming back to haunt them)
Strange but true! -- The safety of yellow off-set by the dreaded yellow-effect tainting the assembly line --- who would've guess this reversal of fortune.
