Learner Drivers to Take Bike Test?

#1 Unread post by mogster »

Just been reading MCN & letter suggested that all learner car drivers should take compulsory CBT (basic off road bike test).

The idea is it would give car drivers an inkling into the vulnerability of bikers & hopefully make them more bike aware. It might also recruit some new riders!

What do you guys think and/or are there any similar schemes out there?

I don't know what exactly's in your CBT, but I'll assume it's similar to the test at the end of the USA's MSF basic course. I certainly appreciate the spirit behind the idea, but I don't think it's practical. There's a lot of people who can drive a four-wheel vehicle well enough but may have physical limitations that keep them off a motorcycle. I just can't see preventing them from driving four wheel vehicles because they can't (or shouldn't) operate a motorcycle.

I think they should just make the driving test much harder to pass. Also there should be mandatory re-testing when a driver reaches a certain age.

Also don't you think if someone loses their licence they should have to resit? I think this would make people drive much more carefully than fines or temporary bans.

Make cycling proficiency compulsory at schools
I spent my therapy money an a K1200S
The therapy worked, I got a GS now
A touch of insanity crept back in the shape of an R1200R

That certain age would be 16-25 if you ask me. Old people may drive slower but young and stupid is more dangerous I feel. Some type of mandatory motorcycle awareness would be a good idea.

I agree with the cycling proficiency idea. When I was young schools often had courses.

I also wish the police here would stop cyclists more often. No lights, going straight through stop lights & weaving in & out of traffic without looking are just some of the bad behaviours that wind me up!
