A multimeter is a must for every toolbox.

It looks like the culprit is the ignition switch or the wiring in its immediate vicinity.
The fact that this happened after he washed it could very well point to a faulty wiring or a switch that was on its way out and being hit with water was the straw that broke the camel's back.
