I have a bmwF650gs 2008 model 800cc twin, It has the factory fitted lower suspension and seat for a lower seat height. When i bought it i herd the noise but was assured it was probabley a service item ie loose chain so would be dealt with in service period. However 18 months on i have been informed that in actual fact it is a characteristic of the bike due to the revised geometry of the suspension and can not be cured. The chain tension is very tight with hardley any movement set by BMW workshop, yet the slapping is still there and is driving me made to the point that it distracts my attention while riding.
Does any one have any thoughts / comments please.
So far after prolonged written correspondence with BMW i am getting no where. They appear to think its ok. to ride at 3000rpm in every gear at any speed to try to lessen the chain slapping noise.

Re: BMW F650 GS Chain slapping
I think that what BMW are telling you is a cop out. take the bike to a reputable bike workshop for a second opinion
I spent my therapy money an a K1200S
The therapy worked, I got a GS now
A touch of insanity crept back in the shape of an R1200R

Re: BMW F650 GS Chain slapping
The chain is slapping against the plastic chain guides.
The more you weight down the rear suspension the more the swingarm straightens out. Compare your lowered model with one with the regular suspension, you will see that your swingarm is less tilted.
So obviously BMW designed the bike to work with the regular suspension and the lowered suspension was more of an afterthought thus the increased slapping noise.
That being said I don't think tightening the chain that much is a good idea at all.
