Memorable Moments

#1 Unread post by JackoftheGreen »

It's winter, and many of us riders are either snowbound or at least coldbound. The winter lull is upon us, so I suggest this as a diversion: memorable moments. Funny, frightening, uplifting, educational or otherwise, share with us your favorite anecdotes from your own two-wheeled adventures.

I'll begin, although if you've read my blog you're familiar with this story.

One of the first 'longer' rides Carrie and I took together was to Bear Lake, a picturesque little resort town close to Utah's border with Idaho. Beautiful views and highly technical canyon riding -- it's an excellent daytrip and one of our favorites. There's a pizza place there called, imaginatively, 'The Bear Lake Pizza CO', and their pies are very good.

Now, first, both of our bikes have V&H pipes and are quite loud. Bear Lake is a quiet little town, and the Bear Lake Pizza CO is just a little establishment. The parking spots we chose were right out front, which is to say they were all of fifteen or twenty actual feet from the front counter and register inside. Carrie and I stroll in wearing our chaps, vests and boots and carrying our helmets, order our pizza and tuck in.

Well, we only finished about half the pizza. When we head to the counter to pay, we asked the older gentleman working the register whether we could get some tin foil from the kitchen to wrap our leftover pizza in. He gives us a quizzical look, gestures to the stack of empty 18" square pizza boxes next to the register and says, "Sure, but we have take out boxes..."

Ya can't fix stupid!!!
Well we were into the ADK rally last May and were coming down off white face mountain and down onto 9n in a wolfpack of 7 or so machines. We are riding a SPRITED pace not insane just paced if you will. The cop kicks on his cherries and pulls over 2 of the 7 machines, we are waiting up a bit and all the cagers are looking at the pulled over machines and swerving toward us so we hatted up and pulled about 1/2 mile down the road and waited. Well after chewing the 2 riders bottoms for us leaving he jumps in the criuser and comes up to us and jumps out and says WHY DID YOU GUYS LEAVE and I looked at him like a dad looks at his kid and said : Well wouldn't you have? He didn't know what to say until he saw me grinning I couldn't hold it anymore and I giggled when I told him why we pulled down the road he was actually pretty chilled and being as no one was flying we all got a stern watch your speed and be safe out there. He really was a great cop we need more like him.

My first solo road trip. I had been a nervous novice and finally decided I needed to go for a ride somewhere by myself.

I rode from Vancouver to Vernon and stayed a few days and then rode home. The ride up was terrific. I was enjoying my solo experience immensely. The ride home started off promising, but by the time I was getting to the Coquihalla the weather was changing. The temperatures dropped and icy rain began to fall. Then there was an area of construction that was ridged surface and the flag people had us going very slow.

By the time I got past the toll booth I was low on fuel. I just didn't know how low... The bike started to sputter and for a moment I was worried that the bike was having a mechanical problem. I finally remembered "RESERVE"....Thankfully by then it was mostly downhill to Hope. I had to slow down a lot and I made it into Hope on reserve and maybe fumes.

I fuelled in Hope and got a snack and warm drink and carried on. By the time I got to Langley I was cold, tired and hungry. I stopped for dinner. Even though I was only about a half hour from home at that point, I knew I had to stop.

The reason this is such a good memory for me is that I passed a mental hurdle. Even through the icy rain and cold etc...I kept going and didn't give in to fear.

This ride helped to boost my self confidence.
