I thought I'd take Mintbread up on that suggestion and toss out this poll...Mintbread wrote:It would depend on the posted speed limit.
Perhaps it would be more effective to gauge how far above or below a speed limit people ride at.
How far Above or Below the speed limit?

I usually go 70-80. The universal speed limit in OR (at least the part where I live) for unposted roads is 55, and I spend most of my time on unposted low traffic roads, so I marked the 20 choice. If I'm on a highway or something with heavy traffic it's however fast everyone else is going. About 65-70 usually. In residential I almost always go 25 or less, never over 30, and in parking lots I go shopping cart speed.
My bike's "happy zone" is right around 70 though. If I had my way all speed limits would be 70.

You're crazy I say!!! I've gone just a hair over 110 on my magna 700, but I don't really enjoy going that fast. The wind buffets my head side to side 10000 times a second and I can't see straight.ZooTech wrote:I've been known to wizz past cages at 60mph over (like 125mph in a 65) when the itch hits me.

That's helmet-free, and my head is perfectly still. And there's plenty of pull left at that speed, too, so I don't doubt she'll use most if not all of her 140mph speedo.Mag7C wrote:The wind buffets my head side to side 10000 times a second and I can't see straight.125 though, that's one hell of a cruiser.

I try to ride the speed limit and I will ride in the right lane or the HOV lane to do so, so the speed demons can pass in the passing lane.
At other times, like on a recent Friday evening heading out of town, I was riding about 15 over the limit just to keep from getting pushed off the road.
I should be allowed to ride legal, darn it anyway, without being given a hard time about it and without being "pushed" to potentially get a ticket...or worse.
My job depends on my clean license.

It depends on who is behind me.
It seems that most cars wanna see how good there car handles on corners, or how close they can get to your "O Ring" end.
So I don't give cagers a free pass at anyspeed......
I know I should have more self controll, but my speed saves their "O Ring" from getting kicked.

If I'm in a 35 MPH zone or slower I try to stay AT the speed limit. From a 40 MPH zone to 50 MPH zone I will generally try to stay no more than 5 MPH over. Once at the 50 MPH and up I will do near 10 MPH over and willing to go even higher in little bursts depending on visability and knowledge of the road I'm on at the time.
I will ride just under the high speed on the freeway - meaning, if there are cars traveling 85 in a 65 on the freeway I will ride a good distance behind them and use them as my radar detectors. His brake lights are a very reliable signal. Very few people on the Ohio freeways or Michigan freeways travel at or near the speed limit and at least 10 over. It is usually unsafe to ride at or near the speed limit there.

That's about right for me too. On the rural roads (55 limit) I'm usually going 70 to 75, but that's when there's nobody around.scanevalexec wrote:If I'm in a 35 MPH zone or slower I try to stay AT the speed limit.
