Has anyone used an AM?FM type radio (speakers in helmet)on their ride? Can you hear it very well? Porbably not on hiway huh? I guess I should ask. Is it also safe to do so?

I did this about 25 yrs. ago. I took some thin headphone speakers and mounted them under the lining in my helmet. Then I got a fairly powerful AM/FM 8-track player (I told you it was a long time ago) and stuck it in the tail section of my Kaw. I wired up a plug from the speaker outputs to the jack in the back of my helmet. Wire and connections were designed to break away if I had to depart the motorcycle for any reason. It worked pretty well, but the setup was not adjustable while riding. You had to pick a radio station or tape, and stick with it.

More recently, I've tried using the portable players (MP3/CD Walkman types), but most don't have enough power to drive speakers in the helmet. You can't hear anything at highway speed. As for safety, it's probably less safe. In order to hear well, you have to drown out a lot of the background noise, which is what you need to be hearing when you ride.

Back in the olden days, Vetter used to make a stereo kit for their big fairings. In order to hear the sound coming from the two big speakers, you had to crank that sucker to an extreme decibel level on the highway. A friend of mine had one and I could hear him coming a block away. Always heard the stereo before I could hear the bike
