hooligan...i have and will always be a hooligan...it doesnt mean im gonna act like an mentally challenged on my bike. i respect my girls and she respects me. but there are times and place to be hooligans...not a charity events. never where anyone can catch...because a hooligan in jail no longer has my back...but when ever im at a stop sign or red light and there is nothing but asphalt in front of me and its not a place where cops sit or children play...im hittin 80 as fast as i can.

"Mid-life crisis" harley riders? That's funny. Those kinds of characterizations tend to make me laugh. The guys that I ride with are mostly in-their-50's Harley riders who have been riding for years.... I'm the one approaching-middle-age girl in the bunch. They're also my skydiving buddies. I whole-heartedly LOVE my riding buddies, helmets or not. What else is great, besides sharing two wonderful hobbies with a wonderful group of people, is that we're a pretty low-key, easy-going bunch who, even when rumbling through some tiny back-woods town, still stops at the crosswalks....

Yeah...why is it that this site is commended for hosting a populous that respects all other bikes, regardless of make or model, yet in the same breathe a lot of you come down so hard on people who choose not to wear a suit of armor every time they ride? Can you not show the same level of respect for someone who dresses differently? I spent 99% of this summer riding in jeans, a muscle-tee, and sun glasses - and I had a wonderful time doing it. Make no mistake about it, guys, we are all taking a huge risk riding motorcycles, so why must I continually defend my right to legally ride helmetless?

We do all take a risk every time we get on the bike. However, those who gear up take less risk. To each their own. I choose to ride a motorcycle (more dangerous) and gear up (less dangerous) while I'm doing it. Besides, I didn't see anything in that post threatening your right to a helmet choice or insulting it either.

Not to mention the countless other references I read during my visits to the forum. What business is it of yours what I wear or how safe I choose to be when riding? Can't an argument be made that, even though you wear gear, you don't wear enough? Can't we just respect other riders' rights to go their own way and do their own thing without all the subliminal banter about them being squids or whatever? I seriously take offense to being referred to in such a way...like you're better or smarter than me or something. Please, wear whatever you need to wear in order to feel as safe as you need to feel, and let others choose their own path without all the condescention.

Amen - I feel the same way. But this a motorcycle site and I'm a strong advocate for wearing gear and I won't be silent about that. I just chimed in here because I didn't see anything inflammatory in that particular post. I've got over 600 posts here and you won't find a single example of me insulting someone for their choice of gear - in fact I've often stated that I'd vote to let riders choose even though I'd privately encourage them to wear a full-face and leather jacket at a minimum.

Actually, most of us who have been part of these forums for a long time have come to terms with the fact that no matter how much we stress wearing gear, many riders will always refuse to do so for their own reasons. I can tell you it has been a difficult thing for me to stop being the gear crusader I once was.
It still worries me, though, that I may be called upon, just by virtue of being at the wrong place at the wrong time, to be the first responder when a helmetless, gearless rider has parts of his anatomy lying all over the road.
The only middle-aged riders that hit the news around here are usually the baby boomers, approaching retirement, finally buying that Harley [don't know why, but these things usually involve a Harley] he's been trusting for the last ten years, goes out on it, gets over his head immediately, is dead. I would agree that most Harley middle-aged riders have been riding for years, but there's nothing to write about people who don't crash & burn.
It is no skin off our nose how much or how little gear our fellow riders wear, as long as legal requirements are satisfied.

Leave it to Zootech to turn an otherwise positive thread into a negative one. And then try to nitpick and debate people on every little point.

Some people just don't seem to be happy unless they are arguing with someone about something senseless.

I'm comfortable wearing my jacket, boots, gloves, and full face.

You can ride around naked for all I care.

I'm no crusader. I might try to crusade a tiny bit to a new rider who doesn't know what's up yet, but I'm not going to try to change the mind of an experienced rider. There's usually not much I could tell them they don't already know. Afetr you have the knowledge, choices are choices.
