Tinted face shields are all right by day I think. It saves you having to wear sunglasses. As for me, I still prefer the sunglasses. And I think, whatever they might guarantee, tinted face shields are not favorable to use by nighttime.

If you're looking for sources of these -- try Street Motorcycle Accessories. They have HJC, Icon, Shoei etc. motorcycle helmet accessories stuff.

I use dark tint. In town, under street lights, it is fine...but I don't live in town, and got a rude awakening the first time I hit my rural road at night, having forgotten it was even dark out...just riding in town after church on a Wednesday night and forgot it was getting dark. Out from under the lights, it got very dark. I wear large glasses with my other flip-up helmet, but this one is a HJC 10 ff. I wear contacts with it, so flipping it up wasn't an option. fortunately, Vulcanmann500 was right in front of me, so I tailgated him.

When I first started riding, I would wear the dark shield in the day, and ride with the clear shield tucked in my jacket against the contours of my Molson Muscle.

That quickly got to be a bit of a pain.

I tried riding with just the dark sheild on at night. At first, it took a bit of getting used to, but I've never had an issue seeing since. Incidently, even though it's the darkest shield Shoei makes, it's still not dark enough for me. During the day, I have my Oakley's on underneath the dark sheild; perhaps that makes it okay for night riding. I once borrowed my brother's helmet with one of those irridium sheilds on it (the ones that look like colourful mirrors). That was hard to see through at night.
