Doesn't have to be leather.

I'd recommend you go with textile for the first set up anyhow, while you watch and see what's out there. Until you've ridden for a while, you can't really tell what style or features you want: waist length, 3/4 length, pockets outside, pockets inside, velcro, zippers, etc.

Textile is less expensive but still protects very well. It is also lighter in weight than leather... and WASHABLE. I just remove the armor and machine wash gentle, then hang to dry. You CANT do that with leather and it can get kind of skanky.

Have a look at newenough.com and motorcycle-usa.com both have a big assortment of gear at reasonable prices.

And do NOT forget gloves. Hand injuries can put you out of work for a loooong time.

My wife ordered her stuff through Motorcyclecloseouts.com

She was happy with it.

Also, a lot of dealers will give you a break on gear when you purchase a bike. Not usually the best deal in the world, but sometimes they can come through with a good one.

I'm very happy with my FirstGear Kilimanjaro textile jacket. The benefits of textile are what won me over. Lighter, better customizable venting, water proof, lots of wind sealing flaps, reflective strip on back and piping, removable amour to wash the jacket, zip out cold weather lining, etc. And yeah, most of the time textile is far cheaper than leather.

Check out JC Whitney too. I got a jacket there 16 years ago that I still wear.

Good prices at both.
