Backfires through Carb

I just bought a new 2005 Vulcan 800 Classic and It backfires through the Carb. Dealer explained that it was an EPA issue and he could not tell me the fix but I could google it. Does anyone know the web site?

Popping thru the carbs is a sign of a lean condition. It's an EPA issue because today's bikes are set to run lean at idle to meet emissions standards. This setting is controlled (usually) by a little screw that either regulates the amount of air or fuel going to the cylinder at idle. This screw has been made tamper-proof since the (mid?) 80's to prevent owners from screwing with this setting.

It is against federal and state law to mess with these initial idle settings on the carbs. Which is why the dealer won't fix this problem with you. The feds -could- put him out of buisiness or fine the heck out of him if they found out he was doing anything like this.

What the dealer is hinting at is that you can find a way to bypass the tamper-proofing on your carbs and set the screws to a more favorable setting. I don't know of any specific website for your bike. As it's illegal, I can't recommend that you mess with it either.
