You've all gone through it. Whether it be when you first started riding or the first time somebody found out that you ride a bike. They'd either have a shocked or blank expression on their face, shortly thereafter they'd lecture you on the dangers or riding, whether of not they've had prior riding experience. Lets share. I'll go first.

1. Me: "(jokingly) So mom, you're gunna put the down payment on my bike right???"
Mom: "What!? Are you crazy!? I'm not going to contribute to the death of my son!"

2. Friend: "Riding is dangerous...you can like...like...die!"

3. Girlfriend's dad: "Oh that's dangerous man. I know this fireman who got decapitated while riding his hog."

4. Lady at the DMV: "I'm here for a motorcycle permit."
DMV Proctor: "Why??? They're dangerous."

Okay, you're turn. :)

2. Friend: "Riding is dangerous...you can like...like...die!"
Lol that sounds a lot like something my friends would say.

I don't have any quotes yet because no one really knows I'm even interested in motorcycles.

I plan to surprise the crap out of my family one day and drive up on a motorcycle.

Now maybe that in itself is dangerous but eh, I'm sure I'll have plenty of quotes for you after my mom, aunt, and grandmother all have their goes at me.

I catch it from everyone in my family. Doesn't help that we all live in the same town..

I have been called a "temporary Australian" more times than I care to remember.

Then there is that fun time after you have an accident when everyone says "you are not going to keep riding, are you?"

I just reply to these people with a question:
If a friend/relative dies in a car accident, how do you get to the funeral?

I've heard them all. To be honest, I used to feel the same way myself. I think the MSF class changed my mind. I wasn't positive I wanted to start riding again but I took the class anyway and became convinced that you can greatly reduce your chances of a severe injury or death if you ride smart and dress well. Much like cars, I think the injury statistics go way down if you factor out all the people who were acting like idiots, not using good safety gear, using drugs or alcohol, riding a bike they couldn't handle, etc.

My favorite is, " It's not the motorcycle that's so dangerous, it's that cars don't see you."

True enough in lots of cases I guess. But I can still control most of that myself by not tailgating, pretending I'm invisible and trying to leave myself an out just in case the cage doesn't go where I think he will. When in doubt, slow down and give yourself a bit more time to make a decision.

Friend(s):

"Oooh it's raining out. Sucks for you!"

Most people don't realize my bike is not a showroom piece.

Oh and I get this one once in a while:

"Why did you spend that much on a helmet? If you wreck you're dead anyway."

Actually, my favorite "riding is dangerous" quotes come from the good ol' folks here at TMW!

lol my parents used to give me that line whenever i would do something EXTREMELY bad....it was actually worse on me to hear this than to get yelled at (or hit).
