Riding position vs. what I REALLY want

From everything I've been reading, the Kawi Ninja 500 is one of the best "first bikes" around, not the only one, but one of the best.

I've sat on many bikes and prefer the upright position of the Suzi V-Strom 650, (the one I REALLY want :lol: ), compared to the slight forward lean of the EX.

I can flat foot the V-Strom and have a mature, 38 year old head on my shoulders, (i.e.-I'm not out to set any land speed records), but this will be my first bike. BTW, my first expense is on the MSF course, next on the best riding gear I can find, lastly on the bike itself; right now I'm half way through my second reading of "Proficient Motorcycling".

If my first bike is a Ninja, when I eventually move to the V-Strom, will that change in position be much of an adjustment, or should I learn on the V-Strom?

And many thanks for all the info posted on these different subjects--It has really helped so many people...and probably saved some, too.

have you looked at the GS500. I think its position is more upright than the Ninja 500s is.

If Im not mistaken, the V-Strom has the same motor as an SV650. Do you know the wet weight of the V-Strom? If the bike is similiar to the SV650 in most ways, I dont see why you shouldnt consider that as your first bike.

In the sticky 650 thread above, I think the good and bad of non-supersport 650s is broken down well. The V-Strom should fall in the same category as the SV650. If Im wrong about my appraisel of the V-Strom, Im sure someone will correct me.

the V-Strom is a little heavier than the SV but uses the same engine. However the engine has been retuned for more low end torque to better suit its role as a dual sport.

its not a full on dual sport but kinda a mish mosh of standard, dual sport, and tourer

Check this post, if this lady can get a 650 as a first bike why not you. As long as you committ to doing all the right things there is no reason why a 650 should be a problem. I say go with the V strom

As I have been reading and speaking with others about motorcycles and first bikes I have been told that a more upright position where your feet are under is better for a first time rider. This was told to me by an experienced rider who owns a retail and repair shop. This has also been told to me by other people as well, his happens to be the most credible.

In my opinion, and take it with a grain of salt since I am so new to this; is go with the 650. You are commited to doing it right and safe, it doesn't sound like you will be taking unessessary risks. Go with what you want and just keep your head about you.
