My Shame.....

#1 Unread post by BuzZz »

It's possible some folks have noticed I have never posted word one about bike licenses or licensing laws. That's only because I never had one.

Yep, that's right, never. Been street riding for 22 years, never had a bike license. Never been pulled over on a bike. Up until this year, the fine was only $25, now it's something like $2500. Yeah, I know... bad Buzz, irresponsible behavior, flagrant disregard for the law, all that, I know.... go ahead and chew on me, I don't care. I'm a miscreant.

But less of a miscreant than I was yesterday, cause today I ran down and got my bike license. By 'ran down' I mean I rode 150 miles into Edmonton and took it. They test here in town, but they only do it Tues. thru Thurs., and you need to book it 10 days in advance. And from all reports, the guy that does the testing is a bit of a wanker, and fails most everybody at least once, since he gets paid by the test(privatization  ). And I ain't taking time off work to do it.

But in the city, you can book a test for the following day at dozens of places. So I did that Sat. for today. And I took the test. And passed. And now I'm all legal-like and good to go.

Some observations on the whole deal....

They never once asked me to prove the bike had insurance or registration, or how I got it there from Wainwright. Odd

All the checked was signal and brakelight function.

The tester laid out some cones in the parking lot of the stripmall the office is located in and had me weave and shift and brake and all the basic bike control skills. During one of the u-turns I had to make, some chick in a mini-truck came backing out of her parking spot some distance away and kept backing right past my front wheel and into my cone-course. I had to emergency stop during a slow speed u-turn, right when I had the bike leaned right over. I waited for her to do whatever the hell she was doing and leave(she gave me the finger as she went past again on her way out) and I finished my run. I asked the tested if I got extra points for that, as he had said, "don't worry about traffic or anything, nobody will bother us over here" ... good thing I always look around and trust nobody, she came at me from my blindside. No extra credit, but he had a choice name for her just like me.

Then I had to do a road test. He gave me directions once, a route with 14 turns in it, in Millwoods(you have to have driven in Millwoods to understand this) and said I would be judged on not making any route mistakes on top of the riding part. Trying to remember and find my way was harder than riding..... I turned too close to some bum jay-riding his bicycle against the light and lost 2 marks for that, other than that, I got everything right. Yeah, I know, I'm amazed too. 100% on the written exam(moron-level easy) and I'm legal to be turned loose on 2 wheels. The tester did ask me if I just bought the bike. I said, "uuhh yeah, sure, whatever......". He said, " well it looks like you've been riding it for awhile..." and left it at that. So did I.

And that was it. As a bonus, I renewed my license as it's due in a few months anyway, and my new pic is me with helmet hair and in my Alipinestars jacket.
No Witnesses.... :shifty:

Tsk tsk, B-man! Riding all that time without a license. ;)

Glad to hear you're all legal now and had no problem with the test. A lot of local sportsbike riders "dog" about the tests being tuned to be hard for sportbike riders... when reality is, the lot just can't handle their bike!

Once again, congrats. :)

Feels good Huh, I lost my UK license when I came to SA, rode on my motorsport license(not legal for street riding) for years and finally tok a street license at age 36. Also found the test really easy and had a great tester who explained exactly what he wanted for each part and we even walked the yard course before each part was tested. He was strict on legal plates and sent two guys home for them being too small.
I spent my therapy money an a K1200S

What is the deal with that anyways? Do you guys have to make your own plates? Ours are standard issue stamped steel, take what they give you and bolt it onto the bike. Just like our car plates, only smaller. But still standardized.

You guys have build those billboards they make you bolt to your bikes yourselves? That's just adding insult to injury.....

Wecome to the sport Buzz  That checking the lights must be an Alberta thing because 19 years ago they checked mine and the brake light stuck on..... so there I was frantically fixing it in the parking lot! They don't care how you get there either. I got mine on my 16th birthday and the examiner mentioned how her husband had commented to her how he like my bike when they saw me ride around town a few months earlier....

Don't worry, BuzZz, I rode my CX500 for 3000 miles, my NightHawk 700SC for 8000 miles, and my Mean Streak for a little over 4000 before finally getting a license this year. I did have insurance that whole time (except when I first got the CX) but it's funny how my insurance company never bothered to ask if I even had a permit!

I remember one day when I was riding my Mean Streak on the permit, for what little time I had one (you have to turn in your permit packet to take the license exam, so you have to get one even if it's only for a few days), and thinking, "It says not to ride at night, without a helmet, with a passenger, or on the freeway" and at the time I was riding at night, on the freeway, with a passenger, and neither of us had a helmet!

Congrats! At least you didn't not get a license and then move to a province that has a graduated licensing system!

I can't believe they made you try and remember a route through millwoods! I get scared every time I drive through there and worry that I will never find my way out.

Cheers,

Nah, we are also supposed to have standard plates, big ugly things. However, the fine fine for having no plate is R200. The fine for defacing a plate is R500. The fine for having the wrong size plate is R1000. So we ride like this.
