Soooo...they used a 2-year old bike, missing the opportunity to sell the latest-and-greatest offering?
You'll have to remember that while the film may have been released in 1986, it was filmed in 1984-1985. It generally takes anywhere from 6-10 months for postproduction work to be finished before a film is ready to be released to the theatres. Top Gun was released May 16 1986, which means that it was probably filmed in late 1984/early 1985, making the bike relatively up to date for the time.

That's a very good point. I suppose even though bike and car makers release next year's models early, it still wouldn't make up for the time needed for filming.
