street bike engine in a go cart

this is a new idea me and my buddy had. So here we are siting out in front of the house drinking some beer and here come the little teenage a$$hole from down the street with his 10 grand racing go cart. This little "O Ring" does donut in front of my house. so my buddy said that he had a go cart frame and said we should fix it to kick that "Donut Holes" "O Ring" . Because were both in to bikes we had the idea to put a street bike engine in his go cart. so do you think this is possible and what engine you guys think we should use

Hi Guys

Some japanese 4 cylinder would do nicely. Rigging up the clutch and gearbox may present a challange. Go on, P155 the little turd off

google for Formula SAE. Engineering students design, build, and race carts that are just that - sportbike-engine powered carts. Hell of a lot of fun - a 250cc Ninja motor + EFI + an intercooled turbo = 0-60 3 seconds flat, 1+ g lateral acceleration, and yeah. Even a naturally aspirated 600cc mill is stupid fast. Given you won't be in the FSAE competition - thus not subject to their regulations - you could easily make tire shredding power (think GSXR 1000 mill + forced induction)

Fruit for thought (thoughts I've had myself - I did FSAE in 2001.)

Ever seen one of those superkarts. its just a 250cc 2-stroke engine on on of those shifter kart frames. Only major addition is downforce producing bodywork. They accelerate about as fast as a 600 sportbike and top out around 140mph.

Clutch and shifter is not too hard for a MC engined kart, you run the clutch cable and lever up front near the steering wheel and only use the clutch to start/stop. And rig up a lever to actuate the shifter on the tranny. Drive is just a simple chain affair. The reason why 2 strokes are more popular for karts is for the lightweight and also they are easier to shift without the clutch.

mr donutholes kart probably uses a 125cc MX bike engine. actually quite fast and tops out around 100mph. Those shifter karts use a simple clutch lever near the steering wheel to start/stop and paddles (like an F1 car) to shift gears. These little terrors can corner almost as fast an an indy or F1 car and can hit 60 in about 5 seconds or so. Oh and they are not super expensive either. And are an absolute blast on a road course
