New Helmet, I can't feel my cheeks.

My first ever helmet came today. An HJC CS-12 Von Breaker at New Enough, the cheapest helmet they've got. It's built good, but then again I have no frame of reference. As the helmet guideline sticky post states, the helmet goes on with a struggle. And I find myself having to stick my fingers in the helmet trying to position my ear since it folds up when I put my helmet on. The fit is good but the only thing that bothers me is that the padding around the cheeks squishes my face. As soon as I take off the helmet my cheeks feel so numb. Is this a common thing or should I look for a bigger size? Or will the thing compress on its own over time.

That's at least one size to small. Go to the shop and try some more on. Buy based on fit, not looks or price. You only have one head, might as well keep it safe.

sounds a little small... but it should be good and snug when you get it... because the padding will stretch a little over time... so when your looking for a helmet dont go for the perfect fit.. go for the one that hugs... and it will eventually get to the perfect fit... at least this is my experience with helmets.... happy trails fellas!!!

It may be a bit small. BUT, how is the fit around the crown of your head? Have you worn it while watching TV or something?

Some helmet manufacturers have 'swap-outable' cheek padding. Check that out, if the top of the helmet fits, you may just need to replace the cheek padding with something thinner.

As far as the ears folding up, get yourself a helmet liner. Sliks is one brand. The nice thing is it helps keep your helmet from getting too funky. It looks like an old fashioned swimming cap (picture from the 50's) but is made of fabric. You put it on before sliding on the helmet. When you take off the helmet, the Sliks will usually stay in the helmet.

Sorry mate, I disagree. If the rest of the helmet feels fine and it is just the cheek pads, then it probably is the right fit. Most helmets when you first try them will be uncomfortable but the helmet should pull your face around a little bit. My old Bieffe also used to fold one ear over but within a month it had loosened up. If there is pain on the pressure points of your skull, in particular, right on the top of your head, then it is too small.

Oh the joys of buying online. PS you might have a little head with big ears and a fat face, who knows.
