I need a new front fender for a 1982 yamaha maxim 400. Does anyone know if other Yamaha maxim of the same year (different engine sizes) will fit?

The best way to check this is to find some parts fiche.
You are actually very lucky in that Yamaha puts all their parts fiche online - So, just look up your bike, write down the part number for your fender, and then look at the fiche for the xj750 fender. If the parts match, you're good to go.

Alright, I'm still trying to figure this out. They are different fenders, there is no doubt about it. However as long as the XJ750 forks are the same width as the XJ400 I think I can make it work. The only other thing I can think that will make a difference (help me if you think of something else) is the bolt pattern, and I think I can make that fit with some minor modifications.
Here's the XJ750
