this scares me

#1 Unread post by ninja79 »

Hey there,

I know a few of you live in California. I'm moving there in january and I'm planning to get a bike when I do. Here is what I was wondering though: how often do you get earthquakes? What happens if you're riding a bike on the highway when it hits? That's the one thing I'm scared of. Well that and the soccer mom driving her giant SUV while talking on the phone and/or fixing her makeup and/or feeding her child french fries....

(btw, is this the stupidest question that was ever asked on this forum? Do I win a prize?)

thanks,

Eugene

No not the stupiest question, at least not the stupidest one ive seen. We have earthquakes alot. Truly we have one every day but after 4 months or so you wont notice the small ones. As for if your riding, id say keep riding, just make sure the highway doesnt fall. In 1994 we had an earthquak and a highway fell down and a biker flew off of it. There are videos of it out there somewhere. When im driving and i feel an earthquak, i keep driving, if i stop ill get hit, so i go. As for the soccer mom, look out forthe escalade drivers doing make up, reading the paper, on the cell phone with a kid yelling in their ear. . . heh heh. Hope that answers some of your questions. If not ill try again and be clearer

If you're on a bike, wouldn't you fall when the ground starts to shake? Especially if you're in a turn?

You won't even feel an earthquake under about 3.5 and just about every structure is built to withstand a 6.0 so not much to worry about. I would only worry if i was under a freeway overpass but you get no warning about when a earhquake hits so be like the rest of us here in CA ignore them.

But if you're on the bike and making a turn, wouldn't you lose the balance?

If you were standing under a shelf, wouldn't you run the risk of catching a book in the head?

I say wear the gear and go out and have some fun :P
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

In order to really feel it while on the road it would have to be a killer quake . So then it won't matter cause all ya gotta do is bend over and kiss your arse good bye................
What part of Cali are you moving to ?
