What are the possible consequences of adding too much oil during an oil change?

leaks, or burning oil with your gas...

You can over-pressurize the case causing a gasket to rupture. It depends on how much it was overfilled, how long it was run that way, and how hard it was run.

It's remarkably easy to make sure you have the right amount in there,just keep it level and fill it to between the lines. Crank it over then double check. Some bikes have a dipstick, some have a sight hole. Add the oil slowly and you'll be fine.

hehe. ive done this with cars during a tune up. had to fix it by draining some of the new stuff after i cranked it. i was surprised it survived the crank with all the extra... anyway, it sounds like you already over filled the tank. i would suggest draining some if its over the mark too much. dont know how too much is, use your common sense to judge. and keep in mind, waisted oil is cheeper than a waisted engine any day of the week.

I've done the over-filling trick twice before. I don't know what it is about oil changing and brain farts, but I make sure to be extra careful now. The reason is that both times I overfilled (.75 to 1 qt. too much), the engines promptly started oozing oil from various engine gaskets.

Even after I removed the excess oil, the seals keep leaking. It's a huge pain to have to spend so much effort fixing what could have been so easily avoided.
