I'm all for buying used; but this smells funky. Who doesn't replace a 15$ part? Especially leading up to a sale? That takes a new type of stupid.

Play it safer, I'd wait and find another used bike that is more likely to not cause me a ton of grief in the end.

At the very least, find someone that is an expert in motorcycle mechanics. I was considering buying a $500 used bike a little while back, but decided to hold off until I could find someone with more expertise than I have. I got a friend of mine that's building his own bike from scratch (the guy's even custom welding his own frame together...scary) to come with me. He cranked the used bike up, sniffed the air, felt the exhaust, put his ear to the motor, and leaned it over to either side once. That's it. It all looked pretty mystical to me because he then told the seller that it had a bad transmission and probably a bunch of rust in the carbs so it wouldn't be worth the hassle to pay $500 for. I was astounded. This guy just used ESP to save me $500 and a shyteload of hassle, and it cost me nothing for his time.

At any rate, have an expert look at it and listen to what they have to say. It might be a real lemon, and if you're broke like me you can hardly afford to toss $500 on something that'll cost $1000+ to get running properly.
