That'll depend on where you are. I was talking to a cop about this a few months back. He was telling me that in my state (AZ), you can go through the red light after you've waited a reasonable amount of time and determined that your bike is not tripping the sensor. On the other hand, he told me that it would be illegal to get off your bike and walk over to the light and push the pedestrian button.canuckerjay wrote:If there's no one else around to run over that thing and change it, I've just gotten off and hit the pedestrian button.

i just got off the phone with CHP & LAPD.......here in L.A., CALIFORNIA...........they said if you wait a reasonable time and run a red light and a cop sees you, you WILL be cited.......HOWEVER: (the following is what the cop told me) ......you can do your own research by calling the people who made that street and installed the magnetic sensors.......& if you can get papers from them saying that on the date and time you were cited, the street lights wouldn've changed no matter what by detecting your bike, then you can take those papers to court and theyll let you go and it will not be on your record.
so ya, unless you're 100% no cops & other cars are around....you're better off going around it.....making a right followed by a U-turn.
He also mentioned this:
" right before the first cross lines you will see little indentations,.......kinda like an octagon....because the sensors were installed at a different time than the asfault, you'll see them........if you are right over it, it should detect you"
..hope this helped

I had one a few weeks ago that didn't trip. I tried a few "tips" I had heard before to try and set it off:
"Bounce" on the seat to see if you can get the metal close enough to trip the magnet (didn't work, but was fun to test my shocks...
).
Put side-stand down on the "octagon area". Didn't set it off.
Start the bike while over the octagon area, didn't work, either.
I ended up taking a right turn, turning around in a parking lot and then heading the direction I needed. There wasn't any traffic, so I probably could've "ran" it, but didn't want to take that chance.
