2005 Royal Star Midnight Venture HELP

#1 Unread post by graniteguy »

I recently purchased a new midnight venture. I have not been on a bike in 25 years and decided to jump in all the way. I just added a set of Bubs slip on mufflers ( I like the thought of being heard while next to other vehicles) Here lies the problem, when I back off the throttle the bike pops and backfires and it is annoying. I have been told ( by 2 yamaha dealers here in vegas) one put a ball bearing in one of the emmison tubes to block the air. and the other says rejet the carbs and add performance air cleaners. A third shop says go with dynajet and have it dyno tuned for performance.Found out dynajett does not have a kit for 05 royal star.

What should I do about this.

Thanks in advance

New pipes, especially straight ones will reduce the backpressure in the cylinder. Which basically means when the cylinder shoves itself back up to detonate a bunch of the air/fuel mix that is in there gets pushed out through the pipe, because there is no air pressure there to hold it in. This means you have unburned fuel sitting in your pipes. It doesn't REALLY become an issue until you slow down.

The easiest solution would be to put the old pipes back on. Short of that, definately get it rejetted, or better yet have it run on a dyno. Listen to your mechanic.

Oh, and this post should really be in the maintenance forum.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
