I started on dirt with the typical minibike. After two minibikes, I got a Chapparal "mini cycle" that had been converted from the blown 80cc engine to a 4 hp/torque converter set up. I then converted that to a "road bike, and started riding to my friends house 15 miles away on the secondary roads. I primarily stayed on the street (illegally) for the next 3 years, until that glorious day when I got my motorcycle temps. (16 yrs. old) been riding ever since (43 yrs. old now).

If you count the minibike I rode at my uncle's farmlike property, I guess it was dirt. But that was when I was maybe 6 or 7 years old, didn't start riding "real" bikes until I was 20, and that was on the street.

My VERY VERY VERY first time behind the bars was on a friends 1978 Suzuki DS80 in highschool...
COOL I JUST GOOGLED and FOUND A PHOTO OF THE BIKE!
http://www.suzukicycles.org/photos/DS/D ... us_500.jpg
WOW! exactly as I remember it!
specs: http://www.suzukicycles.org/DS-series/DS80.shtml
That first zoom down the back alley and tearing around a park set things in motion... big revs, two-strokes, adrenalin, big smiles... A visit to ol "uncle walts" had me trusting for a Yamaha GT80 enduro bike: red tank with yellow "GT" lettering, street legal kit, and silver metal fenders... whew! what a dream that was... but alas it was never to be.
Then I was able to borrow my brother's DT200 on the street until i got my official license for my next dream bike -- a used 1983 RZ350K, and after a year on the road, it was off to the race tracks... etc. etc. etc.
Lots more fun after that... always commuting... didnt own a car, didnt care... some racing, repairing, etc... tons o' fun
that was over 17 years ago. over the past few years my truck broke down, but I kept my bike going as long as a could afford to... always my first toy, and always my last...
And tomorrow I am going to look at another new bike that someone just "dug up" for me... then perhaps one day i will buy a truck or car again (giggle)... but first the bike again! i can survive without a car, but gotta have another bike this year. weeeeeeeeee...
'er... we shall see. a need just a snippet more luck to land on my plate
but i think the world will look after those little details... karma.
