As I understand it they wont help, may even damage the bike if you are dropping the bike at speed but
If you are dropping the bike at speed its going to be damaged anyway and you'll most likely just be grateful that you are walking away from it.
at high speeds crashes, i too doubt they'll help....but in my first crash, i was going maybe 5-15mph an hour which was pretty slow and i'm pretty sure they would've have helped.......anyway, i joined ex500riders.com and got this link:

How does it prevent damage to the bike?
when the bike falls on it's side (lowsiding is the ride term i think), the bike slides on the "frame sliders", basically, the frame sliders, prevent the fenders from toouching the ground....
here is a really bad example:
they're like arms for your motorcycle.....what's the first thing you do when you are about to fall? ..you put your arms in front of you so you're head doesn't hit the ground.
i hope my bad example helped.

Actually that example works really well. Thanks for the info. Guess they are little bits of money spent to prevent big bits of money from being spent when you spill.

I looked at it that way, I decided I'd rather spend $60 on throw away crash bobbins then $200 on a new tank if I tip mine.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
