Actually,, the major limiting factor, as stated before, is the mass and piston velocity, not the valve train. while valve train issues can limit you, the forces on the pistons and rods is the limiting factor. Piston spped is determined by the stroke. For a given size engine, the larger the bore, the shorter the stroke (and less piston speed), the smaller the bore, the longer the stroke (a faster max piston speed.
The force on a concceting rod = Mass x Velocity Squared.
2 time the mass = 2 times the force.
2 times the speed (velocity)= 4 times the force
So a small bore (600 CC/ 4 cyl = 150 CC/ Cylinder) short stroke 4 cyl engine will rev higher than a larger bore and and/or longer stroke Twin of the same displacement since a 600 twin has 300 CC per cylinder . Since the stroke is longer on most twins, the piston has to travel faster to cover the distance in one revolution then a shorter stroke 4 cyl.
