Sorry, I was just plain rude. Ignore my post please.BigPatt wrote:Hi gang!! I'm a beginner cyclist, wanting to get to motorcycling, and i need some advice. I'm a large guy, a 5' 10" 255 pound bodybuilder with plenty of strength. My question is about beginner bikes. What size?! Most of the experts in my area are suggesting 750cc and up for my first bike, and some some even say that I should start on a 1000cc because of my size! Of course i want to be extremely safe so my height and weight what do you guys suggest as my first bike?? (And really the height and weight is correct!!)

And since I'm being honest here, your belly will keep you from fitting well on any sportbike because it will push you too far back from the bars to be comfortable. I'd say get a cruiser.
maybe, but im only 20 pounds lighter than the guy at the same weight and i fit fine on my EX500 and zzr600

Are you the same height? I let someone that size sit on my bike last week and he looked like he was leaning down to pick something up. I could be wrong. Again I appologize if that sounded harsh, it really wasn't meant to be. I do get tired of beating around the bush though and not telling it like it is.JWF505 wrote:Relsek wrote:BigPatt wrote:Hi gang!! Also, the ex 500 sits more like a standard bike than a typical sport bike. I'm not sure about the zzr, is it about the same as the ex?

I think some people are more concerned with looking good at first. I think the realization that riding requires skill and practice comes later. When I first became interested in riding, I had an image of what I wanted riding to be. Before I read anything or did any research I wanted a ZX-10 to start on. Of course after I did some research my survival instincts kicked in and I lowered my expectations.Sevulturus wrote:I'm past saying that someone is more likely to get hurt or damage their bike if they start big. They've heard the stats, they know how dangerous it is. What is important to remember is that the riders who start on a small bike and learn to wring every ounce of speed out of the bike will be the better rider. When you need to scrape pegs and pull stoppies to get going the fastest you'll be a way better rider.swatter555 wrote:I tend to warn people of the risks, rather than tell them not to get a certain bike. Its all a matter of risk. Riding on a motorcycle is inherently risky. Learning on a GSX-R 1000 is highly risky. Not that learning on a liter bike is a death sentence or anything, its just that damage to bike or person is so much more likely.
And we all want to be great riders right? Or do we just want to look cool?
I think its completely natural to want a sexy and powerful sportbike. What I think new riders miss is how unnatural the power of modern sportbikes are. Im a logical person, so when I did some research, that was enough for me to lower my expectations. Some people may require more first-hand experience to come to this realization. Also, some people truly have little regard for their safety, or a realization they can be crippled. Not much can be done for them. End of rambling...

Re: Big Boy needs bike advice
Well... the guy said he was a body builder, so I dont think he meant he was just a fatso. A guy who is 5'10 and weighs 255(and is a body builder) is a super solid guy. Anyway, I am 6'2 and I weigh 230 or so and I have a belly. I can sit on 95% of sportbikes and my belly doesnt get in the way. Some of the more cramped liter bikes felt fine to me. I will admit my belly did get in the way on a zx-10. Anyway, to say that guys with a belly cannot ride sportbikes is an incorrect generaliztion. In fact, I have seen guys alot bigger than me ride sportbikes.Relsek wrote:I'm not trying to be a wise guy here, but since when is 5' 10" 255, considered big. Last bike show I went to there was a guy who had was easily 300lbs of fat and had a gxxr-1000. He didn't need his arms to hold himself up at all. Just rested on his tummy. All he wore was a helmet painted like a skull, and sweats (sweat pants and a sweat shirt).
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
